KASHMIR; Crackdown on Public Movement in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir – 38 People Forcibly Disappeared
An initial list of 38 detained individuals has been compiled amid an ongoing crackdown on the public movement in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, according to local media.
According to the source, that the available data remains incomplete, with efforts continuing to gather information on other individuals allegedly forcibly disappeared from various areas.
Sources say that an internet shutdown lasting more than 40 days in the region has made it extremely difficult to obtain complete and timely information from different districts. The Awami Action Committee and other circles reportedly hope that once internet access is restored, more verified and comprehensive details will emerge, which will be made public after confirmation. Relevant groups have appealed to the public to share any credible information they may have about missing or detained individuals to help complete the record.
The crackdown, which has continued for more than a month, has reportedly resulted in the confirmed arrest and subsequent disappearance of hundreds of protesters. The public and the Joint Awami Action Committee have said that these arrests and enforced disappearances were carried out by the Pakistani military, intelligence agencies, and Rangers.
A prominent leader of the public movement, Shaukat Nawaz Mir (son of Habibullah Mir), was reportedly formally arrested by security forces, with video evidence said to exist of the arrest. However, he has not been produced before any court, nor has his presence been reported at any police station. This case, along with the mysterious disappearance of dozens of others, has caused serious concern among the Kashmiri public, the Action Committee, and human rights organizations.
