Kashmir Dispute Rekindled at UN as India, Pakistan Clash on Human Rights

GENEVA: Pakistan and India traded sharp accusations over Kashmir at a United Nations Security Council session, with India asserting that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country and accusing Pakistan of committing serious human rights violations, while Pakistan countered by condemning India’s actions in the region and calling for international intervention to protect human rights.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, stated that Jammu and Kashmir is an “inalienable part” of India. He emphasized that the people in the Indian-administered region enjoy fundamental rights in line with constitutional and democratic traditions, and accused Pakistan of supporting militancy and fueling instability in the region.

In response, Pakistan’s representatives argued that India is violating human rights in the Indian-administered portion of Kashmir. Pakistan urged the international community to closely monitor the situation and called on the United Nations to take concrete steps to ensure security and protect civilians in the region.

The session, held on the occasion of the UN’s 80th anniversary under the theme “The United Nations: Looking Toward the Future,” brought renewed international attention to the long-standing Kashmir dispute. Observers noted that the debate highlighted the persistent tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors and underscored the need for continued global engagement.

Both India and Pakistan presented detailed statements defending their positions, which have been included in the official UN record. Experts said the exchange reflects the ongoing stalemate on Kashmir, a dispute that remains a flashpoint in South Asia and a matter of international concern.
