GWADAR, BALOCHISTAN: The carcass of a blue whale, about 30 feet long, has washed ashore in the coastal city of Gwadar, Balochistan. The blue whale is the largest animal in the world.

The whale had been seen floating at various points in Gwadar’s sea for the past two days before ocean waves carried it near the shore of Gwadar East Bay on Wednesday.

According to reports, the relevant authorities were informed after the carcass was found and marine conservation bodies have begun assessing the situation. The cause of death has not been reported.

Similar incidents have occurred along Balochistan’s coast in the past. In April 2019, a whale about 34 feet long was found dead on the Gwadar coast. In May 2023, a dead blue whale about 42 feet long was found in Bandri, Jiwani. In November of the same year, a 27-foot Bryde’s whale was found dead near Pasni. In June 2024, a whale about 35 feet long was seen floating dead in the sea near Kuntani, Gwadar.

Marine pollution, entanglement in fishing nets and collisions with ships are among the factors that can threaten the survival of blue whales.
