Sardar Akhtar Mengal stopped from visiting bereaved family in Zehri; detained men denied access to brother’s funeral

Sardar Akhtar Mengal

QUETTA: Balochistan National Party (BNP) chief and former Chief Minister of Balochistan Sardar Akhtar Mengal said on Sunday that he and senior members of the party’s central leadership have been prevented since 8am from travelling to Zehri in Khuzdar district, where they intended to offer condolences to the family of Sardar Naseer Ahmed Mosani on the passing of his son.

In a statement posted on X, Mengal said party workers, sympathisers, and friends were also stopped from reaching the bereaved family to express condolences and solidarity.

What made the situation even more distressing, Mengal said, was that sons of Sardar Mosani who are currently in detention were not permitted to attend their own brother’s funeral, a restriction he described as deeply inhumane.

“Sharing in grief, attending a funeral and offering condolences is not only a basic human right but also an important part of our social and cultural values. I did not face such a situation even during General Musharraf’s era.” said Sardar Akhtar Mengal

Mengal said it was deeply alarming that in a system claiming to be democratic, people were being deprived of the fundamental right to share in the grief of their loved ones. He condemned the situation as contrary to both human and social values and called on the government to immediately lift all restrictions.
