BNM Takes Balochistan Case to Geneva, Urges Global Action on Human Rights Violations

BNM 27 March

GENEVA: During the 61st session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Baloch National Movement is organizing an international human rights event that focuses attention on Balochistan and on broader questions about political rights, international responsibility, and human rights violations. The meeting brings together politicians, academics, journalists, lawyers, and human rights defenders in a forum that clearly aims at international visibility.

Balochistan central in Geneva
The core of this news lies in the content of the event. The Baloch National Movement brings Balochistan to attention in Geneva, precisely at the moment that the Human Rights Council convenes. With this, the organization wants to place the situation in the region on an international forum where violations of rights, enforced disappearances, political pressure, and public accountability are central.

The composition of the event points in that direction. Names from Baloch organizations, international advocacy, journalism, academic circles, and rights work are brought together around one clear objective. Because of this, the event gains weight that goes beyond an ordinary meeting. It concerns a targeted intervention in an international human rights environment.

Broad group of speakers
At the event, Dr. Ayesha Siddiqa, senior fellow at King’s College London, Sardar Akhtar Mengal, chairman of BNP, and Dr. Naseem Baloch, chairman of BNM, will speak. Also, Merce Monje, secretary-general of UNPO, and Manzoor Pashteen, leader of PTM and human rights defender, are part of the panel.

Further, Sherbaz Khan, representative of the Workers Party Gilgit Baltistan, Andy Vermaut, human rights activist, journalist and chairman of PostVersa, Gary Cartwright, publisher and editor of EU Today and former adviser to British members of the European Parliament, and Dr. Naseer Dashti, writer, political analyst and executive chairman of the Baloch Human Rights Council, are also on the program.

Additionally, Saqlain Imam, former BBC journalist from London, Ana Lorena, member of the UN Working Group on enforced or involuntary disappearances and human rights lawyer, Hidayat Bhutto, Sindhi politician and organizer at World Sindhi Congress, and Hatim Baloch, human rights defender and coordinator at PAANK BNM, also take part in the event. Salim Baloch and Mahra Baloch act as moderators.

Human rights violations as background
The available information does not elaborate the full program in detail, but the common thread is clear. The presence of BNM, PAANK BNM, the Baloch Human Rights Council, UNPO, and a member of the UN Working Group on enforced or involuntary disappearances makes clear that the human rights situation in Balochistan takes a central place within the event.

With this, the Baloch National Movement brings forward a dossier that has long been asking for attention in international human rights circles. The event places that issue in Geneva within a broader framework of political rights, enforced disappearances, international follow-up, and public pressure. The composition of the panel shows that the organizers are not only conducting a regional conversation, but clearly want to situate Balochistan within an international rights context.

Geneva as a political forum
That this event takes place during the 61st session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva gives the meeting extra significance. Geneva remains a place where states, NGOs, activists, and international institutions meet around human rights issues. By organizing an event there, BNM increases the visibility of its message and of the themes it wants to put on the table.

This choice for Geneva is substantively relevant. The event not only wants to bring together names, but to keep a subject with international scope visible in a forum where pressure can be built and where rights issues can be named internationally.

Belgian presence at international level
For Belgium, the presence of Andy Vermaut is especially notable. He takes part as a human rights activist, journalist, and chairman of PostVersa in a panel in which also academics, politicians, rights defenders, and international voices from different countries are seated. In this way, a Belgian voice also gains a place in an event that wants to bring Balochistan to attention during the Human Rights Council.

This also gives the event an extra dimension for Belgian readers. It shows that the discussion about Balochistan is not limited to one region, but finds connection with broader European and international networks.

Event with broad substantive focus
What makes this event special is the breadth of the participants. Dr. Ayesha Siddiqa brings academic expertise. Sardar Akhtar Mengal and Hidayat Bhutto bring political experience. Merce Monje and Ana Lorena are situated in international and legal rights structures. Gary Cartwright and Saqlain Imam provide a journalistic perspective. Dr. Naseem Baloch, Dr. Naseer Dashti, Hatim Baloch, Salim Baloch, and Mahra Baloch place Balochistan directly at the heart of the discussion.

In this way, an event is created that does not revolve around one discipline, but brings together different voices around one substantive objective. Precisely because of this, the meeting gains political and human rights relevance.
