QUETTA: The educational system in Balochistan’s government colleges is on the verge of collapse due to rampant corruption, incompetence and government negligence. A spokesperson for the Baloch Students Organization (BSO) Shal Zone, In a statment stated that the Education Department in Balochistan has completely neglected colleges due to the absence of NGOs and other projects, allowing corrupt elements free rein.
Annual funds allocated for colleges are reportedly being pocketed by a few individuals, while funds meant for classrooms, science labs and student facilities exist only on paper. Unlike schools, where government, community and student participation along with NGOs help shape policies, colleges suffer due to political enmity and retaliation against student organizations, severely damaging education.
The spokesperson accused the Director of Colleges of appointing favored junior individuals as principals, thereby participating in corruption. Quetta’s oldest degree college is now in ruins, with science labs lacking new equipment for years, hostels and residences falling into disrepair, and no cleaning system in place. Annual maintenance funds reportedly vanish on paper, ending up in private pockets, leaving the college as a relic of a bygone era.
Furthermore, the Director of Colleges is to distribute special quota seats in Punjab and other areas to favored people. Similarly, Girls College Kechi Bag has become a means for favoritism.
The spokesperson warned that if corruption and the destruction of education in the College Department continue, a strong protest will be organized.
