BYC Raises Alarm Over Health of Detained Leader Dr Mahrang Baloch

QUETTA: The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) has expressed serious concern over the condition of its Leader, Mahrang Baloch, stating that her health has declined to an “alarming level” during nearly a year of incarceration.

In a statement released on Sunday, the BYC said Dr Mahrang and other members of the organisation’s leadership have remained in custody for close to a year under baseless and politically motivated cases. The group maintained that no substantive evidence has been presented against her.

According to the statement, Dr Mahrang’s health has progressively worsened over the past six months. The BYC claimed that she submitted multiple written requests to prison authorities seeking medical care, but these appeals went unanswered.

The organisation said her legal counsel subsequently moved the court, which led to a medical examination by a prison doctor. Several diagnostic tests were reportedly advised at that time, yet the group claims she was not transferred to a hospital for further evaluation.

Her condition deteriorated further on 18 February, after which she was shifted to Sheikh Zayed Hospital, where an MRI scan of her lower spine was conducted.

Referring to the MRI findings, the BYC stated that doctors detected a number of spinal complications, including muscular spasm leading to mild straightening of the lumbar spine, disc bulges at the L4–L5 and L5–S1 levels, narrowing of the neural foramina causing nerve root pressure, and a central annular tear at the L4–L5 level.

The group further said that authorities initially withheld the MRI report from Dr Mahrang and her lawyers, and that it was obtained only after sustained legal and public pressure over a period of ten days.

Describing the medical condition as serious and requiring immediate attention, the BYC criticised what it called the continued denial of bail and prolonged legal proceedings. It argued that her continued detention, coupled with inadequate medical care, amounts to a violation of her fundamental rights.

The statement concluded with a demand for her immediate access to proper medical treatment and release, along with the release of other detained BYC leaders.
