QUETTA: The family members of Basir Ahmed Sumalani, who has been forcibly disappeared, have contacted Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) Secretary General Hooran Baloch to inform her about his disappearance.
According to the family, Basir Ahmed Sumalani, son of Abdul Aziz and resident of Khilak Mir Muhammad Khan Sumalani, Panjpai, was taken into custody by security forces on the night of April 18 around 3 a.m. from his parking area near Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Quetta and transferred to an unknown location.
The family states that Basir Ahmed has neither been presented in any court nor has any information about his whereabouts been provided. This has caused severe mental anguish and distress for the family.
At this occasion, VBMP Secretary General Hooran Baloch assured the family that Basir Ahmed’s case will be raised before senior authorities under national laws and that every forum will be used to demand his safe recovery.
Hooran Baloch condemned the practice of detaining any citizen without a warrant and withholding information from families, calling it a serious violation of fundamental human rights.
She demanded the immediate recovery of Basir Ahmed and all other Baloch missing persons. If there are any charges against them, they must be presented in court with the right to legal defense.
VBMP also called on the government to immediately end enforced disappearances and extrajudicial actions, and to treat citizens in accordance with the constitution and the law.
In related developments, it is reported that in the Panjpai area of Mastung, Pakistani forces conducted a security operation where dozens of people disappeared. Among them, three young men were reportedly killed within an hour of arrest. Their bodies were taken to Civil Hospital Quetta, but the authorities initially refused to hand them over to their families. Following protests at the VBMP Camp, the bodies were finally released to the families after six days.
The three men have been identified as Safeer Sumalani, Amanullah Sumalani and Irfan Muhammad Hassni. According to their families, they were taken into custody during a security operation on April 16 from the Ladi Dasht area of Kardgap in Mastung.
