Lillehammer, Norway : At the World Expression Forum (WEXFO) held in Norway, prominent Pakistani human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari was awarded the “Youth Inspiration Human Rights Award 2025” for her fearless advocacy in promoting freedom of expression, democracy, and human rights in Pakistan.
The award was presented by Nobel Peace Prize laureate and journalist Maria Ressa. In her address, Ressa described Imaan Mazari as a bold, resilient, and extraordinary defender of human rights. “This year’s award goes to a woman who is not only a student of law but also a distinguished human rights lawyer,” said Ressa.
She praised Imaan for consistently raising her voice for the rule of law, religious and ethnic equality, justice, and human dignity. Mazari has taken a courageous stance against enforced disappearances, fabricated charges targeting freedom of expression, and the misuse of state power.
Mazari has represented several high-profile cases that challenge the abuse of authority by courts, bureaucracy, and security institutions. Among her clients is Baloch political activist Dr. Mahrang Baloch, who has been in custody since March 2025.
In addition, Mazari herself faced multiple fabricated cases, cybercrime allegations, and state surveillance following her participation in a peaceful protest by the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement in 2023. International organizations like Human Rights Watch and Front Line Defenders have condemned the harassment against her.
Based in Islamabad, Imaan Mazari is especially active in representing Baloch students, victims of enforced disappearances, and political activists. She currently advocates for the families of missing persons in the Islamabad High Court.
Reacting to the award, Baloch Yakjehti Committee activist Sammi Deen Baloch said,
“I’m extremely pleased that Imaan Mazari’s courageous struggle has been recognized globally. This award sends a powerful message of hope to all those standing for freedom of expression and human rights in Pakistan.”
