QUETTA, BALOCHISTAN: 34 Miners Killed in Coal Mine Explosion Near Quetta; Rescue Operation Continues
At least 34 miners have been killed following an explosion at a coal mine near Quetta, the capital of Balochistan. According to officials, a rescue operation is underway to reach miners still trapped inside.
Officials say at least 36 miners were present inside the mine at the time of the accident. According to Balochistan’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the incident occurred in the Sorange area, approximately 40 kilometers east of Quetta.
Authorities say the bodies of 34 workers have been recovered so far.
According to officials, the explosion was caused by a buildup of Methane gas inside the mine. Rescue operations began immediately afterward and continued into the night.
In a statement issued Friday morning, Balochistan’s PDMA confirmed that, based on information received from teams deployed at the site, 34 bodies have been recovered so far.
The administration’s statement added that a joint rescue operation is still underway to locate and extract the remaining miners trapped inside the mine. However, the department has not clarified how many workers were working inside the mine in total at the time of the explosion.
It is worth noting that accidents at coal mines in Balochistan are not uncommon.
