London, UK: Sarang Sindhi, a representative of the Voice for Missing Persons of Sindh (VMPS), has stated that human rights violations against the followers of Sain G.M. Syed continue unabated in Sindh, Pakistan. He was addressing the G.M. Syed International Conference held in London on the occasion of the 122nd birth anniversary of Sain G.M. Syed, which was organized by the Jeay Sindh Freedom Movement.
While speaking at the conference, Sarang Sindhi highlighted his strong family association with the Jeay Sindh movement and the political legacy of Sain G.M. Syed. He said that his father began political activism with Jeay Sindh at the age of 15 and remained closely associated with Sain G.M. Syed for decades. Due to his political beliefs, his father faced severe state victimization during General Zia-ul-Haq’s regime and at various other times in Sindh.
He further recalled that his grandfather was also a victim of General Zia’s dictatorship and was forcibly disappeared for five months. In 1986, Amnesty International London awarded his grandfather the title of “Prisoner of Conscience.”
As a human rights activist, Sarang Sindhi emphasized that the life of G.M. Syed was marked by continuous injustice and political persecution. He stated that Sain G.M. Syed was arrested or kept under house arrest 11 times, spending a total of 31 years and 8 months in detention and jail. Due to this prolonged persecution, Amnesty International recognized Sain G.M. Syed as a “Prisoner of Conscience.”
Expressing grave concern over the current situation, Sarang Sindhi said that the followers of Sain G.M. Syed continue to face severe human rights violations in Sindh. According to the data he presented, more than 3,500 Jeay Sindh political activists were forcibly disappeared between 2000 and 2025, while more than 50 Sindhi political activists were reportedly killed in staged encounters during the same period.
He stated that at present, more than 100 followers of Sain G.M. Syed remain missing, over 200 are imprisoned, and more than 500 activists are living in hiding due to politically motivated and fabricated cases. He also informed the audience that VMPS recently published a New Year Calendar on Sindhi Enforced Disappearances, which was inaugurated a day earlier during the birth anniversary celebrations in Sann.
Sarang Sindhi said that the Voice for Missing Persons of Sindh (VMPS) has been advocating against enforced disappearances and other human rights violations through peaceful and democratic means since its establishment in May 2017. He acknowledged Ms. Sorath Lohar, Convener of VMPS, and paid tribute to her father and VMPS patron Hidayatullah Lohar, who was forcibly disappeared and later brutally killed by unknown forces on 16 February 2024.
In his concluding remarks, Sarang Sindhi paid homage to Sain G.M. Syed, describing him as a symbol of freedom, non-violence, peace, and an ambassador of global harmony and human dignity, whose message continues to inspire oppressed nations and human rights defenders around the world.
