Tehran: Iranian media have reported that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been selected as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
According to reports, the announcement regarding the country’s new leader was made after the Assembly of Experts reached a decision on the succession. A statement regarding Mojtaba Khamenei’s selection was read by a news anchor on state television.
The Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for appointing Iran’s Supreme Leader, reportedly chose Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, stated that Tehran’s “enemies” had expected the country to fall into uncertainty following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. However, he said the Assembly of Experts had completed the process of selecting Mojtaba Khamenei as the new leader.
Unlike his father, Mojtaba Khamenei has largely remained out of the public eye. He has never held an official government position and rarely appears in public, with only a limited number of photographs and videos of him available.
