Nabeel Nodh: The Poet Who Dared to Speak the Truth

Writer: S K Baloch

In every literary tradition, there are individuals whose words transcend the boundaries of time and circumstance, resonating deeply with the human experience. Nabeel Nodh, a Baloch poet of unparalleled talent, is one such individual. His poetry has not only captivated the hearts of his people but has also become a powerful voice for the marginalized Baloch.

Tragically, Nabeel’s fate took a devastating turn when he was abducted by security forces from Gwadar, leaving behind a void filled with uncertainty and anguish as his loved ones await his safe return.

The abduction of poets and writers is not a new phenomenon it transcends borders and cultures. From the disappearance of Argentine poet Jorge Rivera during the military dictatorship to the imprisonment of Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet for his communist views, oppressive regimes across the world have long sought to silence dissenting voices. As the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova once wrote:
“In the terrible years of the Yezhov terror, I spent seventeen months waiting in line outside the prison in Leningrad.”
The anguish Akhmatova described is one I now know all too well as I wait for any news of Nabeel’s fate.

As a close friend, I have had the privilege of witnessing Nabeel’s contributions to literature firsthand. Despite his remarkable talent, he has always remained humble, allowing his words to speak louder than his persona. His poetry, a reflection of the tumultuous situation in Balochistan, serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to giving voice to the voiceless. Like John Keats, Nabeel masterfully weaves narratives that not only highlight the struggles of the Baloch people but also inspire hope and resilience in the face of adversity.

The recent crackdown on dissenting voices particularly Baloch political activists and student leaders has sent shockwaves throughout the region. The abduction of a literary figure like Nabeel is a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in the shadows. As someone who has engaged deeply with his work, I can attest to the profound impact his poetry has had on my understanding of the Baloch struggle. His words have been a source of comfort, inspiration, strength and his absence has left a gaping void that only his safe return can fill.

As I write these words, my heart aches with the longing for Nabeel’s return. His poetry, a testament to his unbreakable spirit, continues to inspire me, and I am certain that his words will echo through generations to come. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that Nabeel’s voice is not silenced that his poetry continues to flow, and that his message of hope and resistance reaches every corner of the globe.

Nabeel Nodh’s abduction is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who dare to challenge the powers that be. As a fellow writer and friend, I implore the international community to stand with us in demanding his safe release.
